Katherine DeSilva, a dedicated professional with a Master’s degree in Special Education, has played a pivotal role in the field of education for the past 10-15 years. Her journey as a Special Educator and Sexual Educator reflects a commitment to fostering inclusive and supportive learning environments.

With a Master of Science in Special Education from Western Governors University and a Bachelor of Fine Art in Communication Design from Massachusetts College of Art & Design, Katherine laid the foundation for a career centered around empowering students with diverse needs. Her journey began in 2012, obtaining the Massachusetts Teaching License with a focus on Moderate Disabilities at the Professional Level for grades 5-12.

Katherine’s expertise extends to various domains, including Visual Art, Health/Family and Consumer Sciences, and Elementary education. She possesses a comprehensive set of licenses, ensuring her ability to cater to the diverse educational needs of students at different levels, from PreK to grade 12.

The narrative of Katherine’s career unfolds through her impactful work experiences. As a Special Education Classroom Teacher at Community High School in Peabody, Massachusetts, she not only instructed Social Emotional Wellness but also modified curriculum to meet CASEL and Massachusetts Framework standards for grades 9-12. Her commitment to individualized education is further evident in her design and instruction of Alternative Art in a Therapeutic classroom.

In her role as an Advisor in the PVMHS Advisory Program, Katherine showcases her dedication to holistic student development. She designs activities aligning with CASEL Frameworks and the PMVHS Vision of the Graduate statement, emphasizing a comprehensive approach to education.

During the challenging times of the COVID-19 pandemic, Katherine demonstrated adaptability and innovation in her position with Peabody Public Schools. She designed and delivered online synchronous and asynchronous training for teachers, addressing the intricacies of remote teaching and incorporating Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) strategies.

Katherine’s expertise also extends to her role as a Lead ABA Special Education Teacher at Melmark New England, where she trained and oversaw ABA counselors, implemented IEPs for pre-vocational and vocational students, and directed instruction for various objectives. Her involvement in residential programs and counseling further highlights her commitment to the well-being of students beyond the academic realm.

Beyond her direct work with students, Katherine has engaged in Tutoring & Extended Placement Substitute Teaching, covering a spectrum of subjects and age groups. Her commitment to professional development is evident in the numerous courses and certifications she has pursued, including advanced courses, sexual education facilitation, and crisis prevention training.

In her capacity as a facilitator for Our Whole Lives (OWL) Sexual Education, Katherine emphasizes the importance of comprehensive sexuality education, aligning with national guidelines. Her commitment to promoting well-being extends to her involvement in programs focusing on behavioral health, social and emotional well-being, and positive psychology in schools.
